Viennese Street Markets: Shopping for Local Treasures

Thought markets were just for shopping? Visit the ones in Vienna and you'll find they’re also for tasting, mingling and getting to know the city and its people better.

Most people tend to see markets as places for shopping. You may do, too. But that will change as soon as you visit some in Vienna and learn that markets are in fact an experience – indeed, a living postcard. If you want to know the real Vienna, beyond Schönbrunn and Sachertorte, this is where you find it. These markets are like mini-worlds within the city, each with its own special atmosphere. So put on your comfiest shoes, and bring a big bag and an even bigger appetite as we take you on an insider tour of some of Vienna's best markets.

Best Viennese markets to explore

1. Naschmarkt

The Naschmarkt in Vienna's 6th district isn't just a market, but an institution. Even though some locals grumble about rising prices and a shift away from traditional offerings, it's still a place you absolutely must visit. It has a lively bazaar vibe and over 170 stalls, shops and restaurants. You'll find everything from local goods to international delicacies – as well as everyone from suited-up business folks to laid-back students. Keep an eye out for the smaller, tucked-away stalls for the best deals and save some room for lunch at one of the trendy eateries.

  • Naschmarkt, Wienzeile, 1060 Vienna
  • Open 6am-9pm (Monday-Friday), 6am-6pm (Saturday)

Good to know: There's a flea market every Saturday from 6:30am to 3pm, with around 400 sellers.

2. Karmelitermarkt

A stone's throw away from Augarten, one of Vienna's most beloved parks, the Karmelitermarkt is an eclectic market in the heart of Leopoldstadt. With a mix of fresh local produce, multicultural specialties and unique finds, this Viennese market goes way beyond the typical. In addition to staples – organic fruit and vegetables, fresh cheeses, bacon in all its varieties – it also offers horse meat, which is a rarity in Vienna. There's also a wonderful selection of homemade products, including pickled lily flowers and natural shampoos. Most things sell out by 1pm, so stay at Hotel Mercure Wien City, which is right next to the market and allows you to get there early and have the pick of the best.

  • Karmelitermarkt, Im Werd-Krummbaumgasse-Leopoldsgasse-Haidgasse, 1020 Vienna
  • Open 6am-9pm (Monday-Friday), 6am-6pm (Saturday)

Pro tip: Visit on Friday or Saturday when the organic farmers come to town.

3. Brunnenmarkt

Second in size only to the Naschmarkt, the Brunnenmarkt in the 16th district is the cheapest Viennese market, and the experience is as exhilarating as it is budget-friendly. This sprawling market has a lot more to offer than stalls packed with delicacies: you'll feel like you're having a holiday in the middle of Vienna, but without the tourist overload. It bustles with locals, though, who are hunting for the best deals. So why not join them? It's great fun, especially if you're keen on bargaining, which isn't only tolerated but encouraged. If you swing by in the evening, don't be surprised to see vendors practically giving away leftovers.

  • Brunnenmarkt, Thaliastraße-Ottakringer Straße, 1160 Vienna
  • Open 6am-9pm (Monday-Friday), 6am-6pm (Saturday)

Pro tip: After shopping, head to the neighbouring Yppenplatz for street art, live music and trendy bars.

4. Hannovermarkt

We love this gem of a market for its colourful mix of local farmers and international traders; all of them approachable, with many tips and stories to share. As for the produce, you'll find everything from Austrian vegetables and spices to Turkish, Middle Eastern and Indian delicacies. The prices are a dream, especially for meat lovers. The butchers enjoy a bit of friendly price competition, so you'll walk away with top-quality beef, lamb or poultry for way less than you’d expect.

  • Hannovermarkt, Hannovermarkt 1, 1200 Vienna
  • Open 6am-9pm (Monday-Friday), 6am-6pm (Saturday)

Fun fact: Many of the stalls can be dismantled, which gives the market an ever-changing look.

5. Kutschkermarkt

Kids groaning at the thought of going to a market? That will change as soon as you visit the Kutschkermarkt in Währing. This Viennese market has a family-friendly atmosphere you won't find anywhere else. There's even a café-boutique that sells children's clothing, as well as a nice little playground just up the road. With cosy cafés perfect for a laid-back brunch and stalls selling everything from gourmet food to vintage furniture, Kutschkermarkt will deliver, whatever it is you're looking for. Keep an eye out for special occasions such as the bi-annual Genusspfad ("tasting trail"), when you discover treats you never knew existed.

  • Kutschkermarkt, Kutschkergasse, 1180 Vienna
  • Open 6am-9pm (Monday-Friday), 6am-6pm (Saturday)

Pro tip: We recommend Café Himmelblau, with its lovely living room feel and an extensive breakfast menu.

6. Vorgartenmarkt

Some Viennese markets thrive on being big and busy, but this charming spot in the 2nd district has been quietly doing its thing since 1912. Thanks to its colourful façades and neat rows of stalls, its relaxed vibe borders on meditative. So, slow down and browse the stalls for organic honey, artisanal cheese or homemade pastries. At the farmers' market on Friday and Saturday mornings, regional specialties take centrestage. And here's a little secret for you: the Mohnzelt (pastry with poppy seed filling) from the Waldviertel region puts the classic Apfelstrudel in the shade. Try it and thank us later.

  • Vorgartenmarkt, Ennsgasse, 1020 Vienna
  • Open 6am-9pm (Monday-Friday), 6am-6pm (Saturday)

Fun fact: Vienna’s oldest beekeeping association runs a honey stall here.

So, there you have it: six Viennese markets that are more than just places where you can pick up fresh, top-quality produce. Each one also offers its own unique atmosphere, flavours and experiences. You'll leave with your bag filled with great food and your heart full of precious memories, ready to dive into Vienna's exciting art scene or explore some of its magnificent palaces.
