A MOST GORGEOUS CAFÉ
Leeds
The Headrow
Not every café sports gleaming marble columns, bright tiled walls and soaring arches. Tiled Hall Café started life as the main reading room for Leeds Central Library, before serving as a sculpture court for Leeds Art Gallery. In the 50s and 60s, the room’s original furnishings were hidden behind mundane shelving, and it quickly fell out of use. So, what happened? In 2007, the room was restored to its former glory. Today, it is an elegant spot for lunch or afternoon tea. Admire the golden mosaic ceiling while enjoying a slice of cake or a glass of wine, or - of course - a proper pot of tea. More culture awaits in the adjoining art gallery and library.
