St. Peter's Island

Explore an island that has been immortalised by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The Swiss-born philosopher and writer only spent two months on St. Peter's Island, but called it "the happiest time of [his] life." A green escape at the centre of Lake Biel, the isle looks much as it did during Rousseau's respite in 1765. Amble along bucolic lanes. Rest under shady oak trees as he once did. In the nearby town centre of Biel, you can visit the place where Rousseau briefly lived after leaving the island. The façade of the structure on Rue Basse is marked by a commemorative plaque.
