Pionirski Park, Corner Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra and Kneza Miloša Street

Hidden Gems
"Passing by Pionirski Park, diagonally from the Parliament building, you come across a pile of stones. You stop and wonder. What does a pile of stones do in a park, close to the street? The flag next to it indicates importance, but the meaning and the reason it stands here today? Those are actually stones that traveled 630 kilometers and descended 2500 meters to come to Belgrade. They were bought by the Serbian army upon their return from the exodus during WWI. In 1916, after being victorious in the battle of Kajmakčalan, also called the “Gates of Freedom”, they gathered stones from the lookout on the mountain and brought it back as eternal reminder of the Golgotha the Serbian nation has had to survive in order to emerge victorious from WWI. On the monument itself, the commanders who fought in the battle are commemorated. "
