Attila the Hun

Attila the Hun

Belgrade

Great War Island, Kalemegdan

Secret History
In the year 453, after conquering what was to conquer in the world, Attila the Hun died. Some say it was a nose bleed that finished him off, others say it was his newly wed wife. Whoever the culprit, the legend says that he was buried in Belgrade. And it was not the typical royal funeral. The Huns, buried him in style. Located on what is today the Great War Island, in the confluence of the two rivers, they temporarily changed the flow of the river Sava until the river bed became visible, buried their king and redirected the river to eternally cover his final resting place. Now, you can take a stroll on the island, look for the hidden grave (some believe that the whole island is actually the tombstone) or just enjoy the nature reserve that the island is today.
