Myths & Legends
This tourist enclave in St. George's Bay, north of the capital, has attractions related to both nature and legends. Of all the things to see in St. Julian’s Malta, a visit to its best-preserved natural secret, Dragonara Cave, is a must. Legend has it that this was the home of a great sea beast, the Silfjun, which terrorised the island's residents. The Maltese decided to name the bay after St George in honour of the saint who slew a dragon, imploring divine protection from this menace. Those Maltese fears were probably based on an extinct marine ancestor of sharks. Today, there are no monsters or sharks in St. Julians, but there remains a spectacular crystal-clear cave that is well worth a visit.
