LUCKY AS A BAT

Haiphong

Du Hang Pagoda

The History of Architecture
While nearby Hanoi may be more familiar to travelers, the northern Vietnamese city of Hai Phong is equally steeped in history. Amongst its fair share of French colonial-era landmarks is a pagoda that has in fact been standing for over 300 years. Rebuilt over the last three centuries, the Du Hang Pagoda showcases Vietnamese architecture and art, including statues and beautifully preserved fine arts from the Nguyen dynasty.

The nickname of Hai Phong translates to “Flamboyant City”, which could easily refer to the ornate roofs of the red-colored pagoda. When visiting, don’t forget to look up and enjoy the elaborate designs of the roofs, but don’t be alarmed at the depiction of the red bat, which is believe to bring good luck. Keep in mind that the ancient pagoda is a working religious site, so dress and act accordingly when visiting.
