Princess Diana Memorial Playground and The Elfin Oak, The Broad Walk, Kensington Gardens

A huge wooden pirate ship is the centrepiece of the Diana, Princess of Wales' Memorial Playground, next to her Kensington Palace home. The kids will love exploring the teepees on the beach and playing on the sculptures in the lush park. The playground is open to supervised children up to the age of 12 – and it’s a very popular spot. There can be queues all day when the weather is warm. But waiting gives you the chance to admire an attraction that is often overlooked. The Elfin Oak is an ancient tree trunk carved by Ivor Innes in 1930. Take a closer look and you’ll discover Innes’s fascinating, intricate figures – Wookey the witch, Huckleberry the gnome, Grumples and Groodles the elves, and more. Comedian Spike Milligan loved the Oak and raised money for its restoration in 1996.
