CROSS THROUGH AN ANCIENT GATEWAY

Badajoz

Puerta de Palmas, 06001 Badajoz,

Enter the city in the same fashion as the citizens of centuries past at the Puerta de Palmas. Built in the 16th century, the gateway is the last remnant of the walls that once surrounded the town. Twin masonry towers, topped by battlements, are divided by an arched entrance. The structure served as a royal prison until the 19th century. The finer details? Get up close to see inscriptions, statues of Spanish kings and Emperor Charles V's coat of arms. On the inside, a small chapel houses a statue of Our Lady of the Angels.
