A TOWERING TREK THROUGH TIME

Badajoz

Calle Costanilla, 1, 06002 Badajoz

Walk in the footsteps of Moorish kings at the Torre de Espantaperros. The 12th-century tower, complete with lookouts and battlements, once kept watch over the Alcazaba, the royal residence of the Taifa Kingdom. In the 16th century, Christians topped the emblematic structure with a Mudéjar bell tower. It is thought that the tower’s name (which translates as “to scare away dogs”) came from the sound of its strident bells. Today, the Torre de Espantaperros presides over La Galera, a 16th-century edifice that has served as a prison, a town hall and an archaeological museum. After admiring the tower, take a stroll through La Galera's lush formal gardens.
