COPE'S CASTLE AND THE PEACOCKS

London

Holland Park, Kensington High Street

A leafy refuge off Kensington High Street, Holland Park originally belonged to Cope’s Castle, a 17th-century mansion built for the Chancellor of the Exchequer under King James I. It became Holland House after it was inherited by the Earl of Holland’s wife, and was a hub for the political and literary elite in the 18th and 19th centuries. Disaster struck during World War II when the house was destroyed by a bomb. The park was opened to the public in the 1950s, and today you can explore 54 acres of open space, woodland and landscaped gardens. Summer opera performances take place on the terrace, the former ice house hosts art exhibitions and you can dine at the elegant Belvedere restaurant. There’s also a tranquil Japanese garden – keep an eye out for the peacocks!
