A PUB FIT FOR A QUEEN

A PUB FIT FOR A QUEEN

London

10A Strathearn Place, Paddington

Stroll north of Hyde Park until you meet the disparaging glare of Queen Victoria, set upon a sign that tells you you've arrived at the Victoria Pub. Legend says the namesake monarch once popped in on her way to nearby Paddington Station. The 19th-century pub was then given its regal name, and appointed in suitable style. Any other famous patrons? Charles Dickens is said to have penned part of his novel Our Mutual Friend at the elegant tavern. Once a haunt for butlers who served the area's well-heeled households, the Victoria maintains tradition with a throwback menu. Feast on venison and ox cheek in a suet pudding. Enjoy a seasonal ale - or two. Never mind the queen's disapproving eye.
