FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Leeds

Michael Marks Building, University of Leeds

Marks & Spencer, the venerable British retailer, had its beginnings in Leeds. In 1884, Belarusian immigrant Michael Marks opened his first bazaar in Kirkgate Market. He became known for his slogan “Don’t ask the price, it’s a penny.” Upon these humble foundations, an empire was born. To celebrate the transformation from penny bazaar to multinational chain, M&S opened its archives to the public. The museum is filled with more than 70,000 items chronicling the company’s history. Here, you get a sense of just how big a role the retailer has played in people’s lives over the past 130 years. Interested in vintage fashions or the history of how we shop and eat?
