R. de Entre-Quintas 220, 4050-240 Macerelas

Overlooking the Douro River, this late 18th-century stately mansion is surrounded by the cathedral oaks and sycamores of the Palácio de Cristal gardens. Inside, it recreates the characteristic interiors and aesthetics of the bourgeoisie of the time. Home to several noblemen over the years, the mansion was inaugurated as a museum in 1972. Its most famous resident? King Carlos Alberto, the exiled monarch of Sardinia and Piedmont, who lived here in the years leading up to his death in 1849. Highlights include the King's Room and period Portuguese furnishings displayed in elegant salons. Make sure to visit the Canvases Room with its huge tempera-painted canvases depicting scenes of typical Romantic ruins.
