In the historic centre of the city, one building in particular is bound to attract your attention: at 144 Rua das Carmelitas, the Lello & Irmão bookshop and its neo-Gothic style dating from 1906 surely deserves the title of the world's most beautiful bookshop, awarded to it by many who have visited. But it also plunges you deep into the world of Harry Potter. A closer look reveals many similarities between Lello & Irmão and the Flourish & Blotts bookshop in Diagon Alley, with its enormous wooden bookcases. A coincidence perhaps? Maybe not... Author J.K. Rowling worked for two years in Porto as an English teacher before writing her novels, and was a regular in the upstairs café of the bookshop... It's such a small world.
