THE BLING-BLING PLACE
Munich
Residenzstraße 1
Before King Ludwig II built Neuschwanstein Castle, he had a sensational conservatory – complete with a pond – erected on the roof of the Residenz palace. This jungle paradise served as a backdrop for private concerts and performances. Unfortunately, singer Josephine Schefzky’s recital went belly-up. She “fell” into the water, hoping the king would come to her rescue. He just rang for a servant – and was disappointed by her performance. Regrettably the conservatory isn’t there anymore, but a visit to the Residenz is still essential if you want to really get to know Munich. And don’t forget to pat the noses of the bronze lions at the entrance – it’ll bring you good luck! Open daily from 10am to 5pm. Closed on public holidays.
