DELVE DOWN UNDER THE ELBE

Hamburg

Alter Elbtunnel, northern entrance by the St. Pauli wharves

Between the wharves of St. Pauli and the island of Steinwerder is one of the world’s most interesting tunnels. The Old Elbe Tunnel lies underwater and has been transporting people and vehicles from one bank to the other since 1911 – it was a sensation when it was built. Because cars can only drive through on weekdays, the tunnel turns into a lively pedestrian zone on weekends. Plunge down in the huge old elevator or take the stairs 24 metres into the depths. After walking about 430 metres under the Elbe through the tiled tube with a diameter of six metres, you reach daylight in Steinwerder. And best of all, the walk through Hamburg’s "underworld" is free of charge!
