FROM SLAUGHTERHOUSE TO ARTS CENTRE
Madrid
Paseo de la Chopera, 14, 28045 Madrid
Dating from 1911, Matadero Madrid is a former slaughterhouse and one of the most noteworthy examples of 20th-century industrial architecture in Madrid. The various pavilions are remarkable for their unique blend of functionality and simple, sleek beauty. They also honour the city’s Moorish past with several Neo-Mudéjar architectural features, including tiles decorated with abstract designs. In the early 2000s, Madrid City Council decided to turn this space into a laboratory for contemporary artistic creation, devoted to building the culture of today and tomorrow. The conversion and restoration work was done with the utmost respect for the slaughterhouse’s exceptional industrial legacy. Today you can enjoy literature, film, music, design and more at this vibrant venue for the arts.
