THE HEART AND SOUL OF SPANISH CITY LIFE
Madrid
Plaza de la Cebada, s/n, 28005 Madrid
Located in the Plaza de la Cebada, in the Barrio de la Latina, the Mercado de la Cebada is one of the largest food markets in Madrid, perpetuating a tradition that dates back to the 16th century. Spanning some 6,000 square metres over two floors, you can buy not only meat, fruit, fish or poultry, but also cosmetics, flowers, eyeglasses, textiles and more. Saturday lunch is the best time to be there, as the market turns into one big seafood party. The ambiance is electric, with friends and visitors alike sharing iced shellfish, shrimp and pulpo (octopus) washed down with a plastic cup or two of Valdepeñas wine. A must for those wishing to experience the real Madrid!
