ANCIENT EGYPT IN THE HEART OF MADRID

Madrid

Calle Ferraz, 1, 28008 Madrid,

Originally built on the island of Philae in Egypt, this ancient temple dates from the early 2nd century BCE. Commissioned by the Kushite king of Meroë to honour the god Amun, it was later extended to form a small temple dedicated to Isis. In 1960, the construction of the Aswan Dam threatened to flood the region’s archaeological sites. The Spanish government helped to relocate the famous Abu Simbel temples to higher ground, and was given the Templo de Debod as thanks in 1968. Dismantled and rebuilt in the Parque del Oeste, it was opened to the public in 1972. The best time to visit is at dusk, for breathtaking views of the illuminated temple against the colours of sunset.
