AN UNKNOWN NATURAL PARADISE

Madrid

Parque El Capricho, Paseo de la Alameda de Osuna, 25, 28042 Madrid

This landscaped park is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Madrid and, paradoxically, one of the least known. It was created in the late 18th century by María Josefa Pimentel, Duchess of Osuna, as a natural paradise frequently visited by the most distinguished personalities of the period. Prestigious artists, gardeners, and set designers all worked here. Today, the park comprises important botanical, sculptural, and artistic treasures including shrines, a hermitage, fountains, a lake and a maze. It also houses a secret: a concealed bunker, Posición Jaca, dating from the Spanish Civil War. It is the only remaining structure of its kind, and a vestige of a troubled past in this otherwise exceptional haven of peace.
