AN ENGLISH SOUP AT THE HOUSE OF ESTE
Reggio emilia
Passeggiata Settecentesca - Viale Umberto I, corso Garibaldi e piazza Gioberti
The Passeggiata Settecentesca (walk of the 1700s) is a promenade that starts from the Palazzo Ducale (duke’s palace), in the historic center of Reggio Emilia, crosses Corso Garibaldi and Viale Umberto, and reaches the Rivalta palace.
Throughout the walk that connects three centuries of history, a sweet curiosity related to the House of Este will keep you company: despite its name, the zuppa inglese (English soup), was born at the court of the Duke of Reggio in the 16th century.
Upon his return from England, a diplomat asked to be served a British trifle, and the court cooks reinterpreted it using local ingredients.
You need not to walk to the Reggia di Rivalta or even across the Channel: the zuppa inglese is one of the most popular desserts in Reggio Emilia.
