In 1986, the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex shut down for good. Since then, the whole former colliery site has been open to the public. Joggers and dog walkers flock to this vast site, as do culture vultures and youngsters, who come here in the evening to relax in the bars. Besides the Ruhr Museum, the highlight of the old colliery is the area around the former coking plant. The disused industrial equipment, coal wagons and brick buildings here are extremely photogenic. It's particularly impressive at night, when the shafts and pipes are lit up with colourful lights. Take the time to follow your nose, exploring this former industrial site. And there's certainly no shortage of unique photo opportunities!
