A picnic in a little-known sculpture park
Essen
Arboretum Trautmann, Aktienstraße 177, 45359 Essen
The Arboretum is hard to find. So hard in fact that only hard-core city insiders know about this five-hectare haven of greenery. But that's just how it should be, because breakfast al fresco in these verdant surroundings is much more pleasant when there's no one else there. On summer weekends you can hire a picnic basket at the entrance, then all you have to do is find a nice place to sit. Once you've eaten, you can amble contentedly through the different themed gardens, past 100-year-old beech trees and through a biotope nature area with fountains. And that's not all – there are works of art dotted here and there around the park. See if you can spot them!
