Essen

Zeche Carl, Wilhelm-Nieswandt-Allee 100, 45326 Essen

Happily, the old colliery building was saved from demolition, because today Zeche Carl is one of the city's most exciting sociocultural centres. It's a haven for DJs and jazz musicians, mask theatre performances and street art workshops. And the listed building itself is of great architectural interest, especially the old winding tower. Tucked away here you'll also find the Malakow restaurant, where young waiters serve really good beer. And you can also bake your own Stockbrot – the traditional German twist bread – the old-school way, over a fire. Right in the middle of these post-industrial brick surroundings!
