Buddha Mountain

Myths & Legends
If you expect to find the world’s biggest carved Buddha image in a temple, you’d be mistaken. There’s a massive Buddha image in south Pattaya you can’t miss, carved into a barren face of Khao Chi Chan mountain. This was the brainchild of the kingdom’s supreme patriarch and created to commemorate His Majesty the late King Bhumibol of Thailand’s golden jubilee.

Measuring 130 meters by 70 meters, the image was engraved on the side of the solitary limestone hill using laser, and inlaid with gold leaf. Here, the Sukhothai-era Buddha is depicted seated, with right hand on knee in the ‘Bumisparsha Mudra’ pose, which represents the moment when Buddha reached enlightenment. The image is large enough to enjoy via a drive-by viewing, but for an up-close viewing, stop by the grounds at the base of the mountain which also includes a temple and garden.
