A fact oft repeated by Johannesburgers is that it takes one minute more to boil an egg in the city than in Durban or Cape Town, the two big coastal cities. Indeed, Johannesburg is located at an elevation or nearly 2,000 metres, which results in very low air density. Its airport, for example, was selected in the 1970s to host landing tests for Concorde, so as to reproduce high altitude conditions. Now you have been warned: if you want that breakfast fast, order your eggs fried instead.
