Fun Things to do in Norwich and Norfolk

Ancient history, contemporary culture and some of the UK’s most stunning scenery – Norwich and the surrounding county of Norfolk have it all.

Whether you’re a history buff, an art fan or someone who loves to shop, the bustling and charming city of Norwich in Norfolk has something to appeal to you. With the magnificent castle and cathedral dominating the skyscape, this is a town that lives and breathes its history while it adapts and evolves in the modern age. And it’s not just about the city, the county of Norfolk boasts some of the most beautiful landscapes to be seen in the whole of England.
Castle and Cathedral
No visit to Norfolk is complete without taking the chance to explore Norwich Cathedral, which can be traced back to the 11th century, and Norwich Castle, both of which came into being when the Norman invaders made the city their home. Visiting the stunning and strikingly peaceful cathedral is one of the best free things to do in Norwich, although donations are of course welcome to contribute to the upkeep of this iconic historical landmark. The castle is also a must-visit for an insight into Norwich’s rich and varied past, and for the stunning city views from the battlements. Art exhibitions here are a regular occurrence and there is a lovely café.
City Living
Like all cities, Norwich has a great selection of places to eat, drink and shop. A perfect way to get the feel of the town is to head to the Elm Hill area where the cobbled streets and striking, ancient architecture provide the perfect backdrop to an exploratory stroll. The Bear Shop with its high quality teddies is a popular stop for both young and old, and cafes like Olive’s or The Tea Room are ideal places to pause for a cuppa. Historic Norwich Market is also an essential item on your must-see list when exploring – you’re sure to find something to tempt you across the 200 stalls there.
Rivers and Lakes
Within the city, the riverside walk along the Wensum provides a surprisingly tranquil vantage point from which to admire swans, boats and the city’s pretty buildings as you take a bit of light exercise. However, Norwich is also on the doorstep of the 303km network of connected rivers and lakes that make up the perennially popular day trip and holiday destination of the Norfolk broads. It’s easy to hire a boat in pretty places like Wroxham, Potter Heigham and Horning. No experience is necessary to get out on the river, but if you’d prefer not to take the helm, there is always the option to take a trip on a skippered boat.
Beside the Seaside
Norwich is close to some of the UK’s most stunning Blue Flag beaches. Hunstanton is an ideal location for an old-fashioned family day at the seaside, with donkey rides available in peak season. Sandy, horse-shoe shaped Holkham is understandably popular with a well-heeled London crowd, but it still retains a peaceful feel. Wells-next-the-Sea, with its colourful beach huts, is another good bet for a family day out with excellent paddling on hand. Cromer is another firm favourite with locals and tourists alike, who enjoy the famous local crab followed by an ice-cream as they take a stroll on the traditional pier.
Visit the Past
A visit to the castle and the cathedral only scratch the surface of Norwich’s long and fascinating history. Felbrigg Hall, in nearby Felbrigg, is a wonderful 17th century National Trust property with a beautiful walled garden to stretch your legs in after a fascinating tour of the house’s grand interior. Back in the city, the Museum of Norwich at the Bridewell brings Norwich’s past alive in an interactive style that’s engaging to both young and old. And don’t miss the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia with works by Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso and Edgar Degas being just a few of the iconic names on display.
