Wine tasting and cocktail making master classes in York

Get to work on your holiday and try a cocktail making course or a wine tasting in York.

With over 200 bars and pubs in York, you’ll never run out of places to get a drink. However, if you’ve had your fill of beer, why not try a wine tasting or cocktail class? Here are the best places to learn the tricks of the trade.
Hotel du Vin
One of the best wine tastings in York is held at the aptly named Hotel du Vin York, near Micklegate. Starting from just £25, you can take the One Evening Wine Tasting, where you get to sample some of the best wines in the business. The Introduction to Wine Tasting gives you all the basics and a minimum of six wines, the Champagne Evening celebrates sparkling wine and the Ultimate Wine and Cheese Evening shares the secret of food and wine pairings. If you’re in York for a while, you can also take a 4-week wine course that offers an in-depth look at wines from around the world.
Yorkshire Heart
Try a drop of Yorkshire Heart’s award-winning wines amongst their 10 acres of vineyards at Nun Monkton, less than 10 miles from York city centre. Wine connoisseurs can sample the vineyard’s own sparkling wines, the only sparkling wine in Yorkshire that uses the traditional champagne method of fermentation. The dedicated staff will take you on a tour around their grounds before giving you a thorough run through of the whole process from grape to glass. Try to your heart’s content and then stock up on your favourites, buying directly from the cellar door. There’s also the sister brewery just down the road if you want to include a beer tour on your trip.
Veeno
Veeno is a sophisticated Italian restaurant just near the Shambles in York city centre. Billing itself as an Italian wine café, Veeno offers wine tastings unlike anything else in the UK. You don’t have to be part of a big group – Veeno offers intimate sessions for couples or families. The barista is on hand to guide you through their local winery, the award-winning wines and techniques for pairing the Italian sharing platter with the six sample wines. If you already know your rosé from your Riesling, you can test your skills with the Blind Wine Tasting where you team up in groups of two and score points for correctly identifying the wines.
All Bar One
For a fun night out with your friends, you can try a York cocktail making course at All Bar One. Located in the heart of the Old Town, All Bar One hosts one of the premier cocktail making classes in York. Over the course of a night, the bar’s expert mixologist will teach you how to make mojitos, martinis and cosmos, or customise your course depending on your tastes – sharp and sour, fresh and fruity, or teas and tinis. You can make a whole night out of it and order sharing plates so all those cocktails don’t go straight to your head!
Revolution
For more cocktail making in York, try Revolution, a restaurant, bar and club on the banks of the River Ouse. The professional bar staff guide you through everything you need to know about cocktails, including explaining all the terms, showing you the perfect measurements and revealing how to pair the different flavours together. You’ll play some fun games during your 90-minute session and of course, you get to drink your new masterpieces along the way! After dark, Revolution turns into one of York’s best nightclubs, where you can party the night away with DJs playing the latest tunes all night long.
The Slug and Lettuce
Don’t let the name put you off – the Slug and Lettuce serves up excellent English pub food, no insects involved! Just a few steps form Revolution, the Slug and Lettuce also has on a cocktail master class for just £25. Sip on a welcome glass of prosecco while the local bartender takes you through the steps to creating the perfect cocktail. You’ll also receive a delicious buffet and be able to take part in a special Jägerbomb rally if you dare!
