Museo del Prado

Velázquez, Goya, Bosch — the Prado is 200 metres from the hotel, about a 3-minute walk. Go right at opening (10am) or after 6pm when the free evening hours start, and you'll dodge most of the tour groups that pack the Las Meninas room midday.

Casa-Museo Lope de Vega

The house on Calle Cervantes 11 where the playwright lived from 1610 until his death in 1635, preserved with his original furniture and the small walled garden he wrote about. It's free, it's a 6-minute walk from the hotel, and it explains why this whole neighbourhood is called Barrio de las Letras.

Plaza de Santa Ana

Ringed by open-air terraces and tapas bars, this is where Barrio de las Letras actually comes alive in the evening. Grab a table, order a caña and a plate of croquetas, and watch the square fill up as the sun goes down — it gets busy after 9pm, especially Thursday to Saturday.

Mercado de San Miguel

A wrought-iron market hall near Plaza Mayor, about a 15-minute walk or a few stops on Line 1 from Antón Martín. Go for the jamón ibérico and the vermouth on tap rather than a full meal — it's built for grazing between stalls, not sitting down.

Parque del Retiro

Madrid's answer to a proper city park, right down to the rowing boats on the pond in front of the Monument to Alfonso XII. The entrance nearest the hotel is 200 metres away — about a 3-minute walk — through the Royal Botanical Garden gate.

Where to eat
Calle de las Huertas and the streets around Plaza Santa Ana are lined with tapas bars where a caña and a plate of jamón rarely costs more than a few euros. For something a step up, book a table at one of the century-old tabernas just off the plaza — many still have zinc bars and tiled walls from when this was a working-class quarter of printers and actors. Café Central on Plaza del Ángel, a 7-minute walk from the hotel, is one of Europe's best-regarded jazz clubs, with evening sets running €8–15 and a room small enough that there's no bad seat.
A neighbourhood built by writers
Barrio de las Letras takes its name from Spain's Golden Age, when Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo and Góngora all lived within a few streets of each other — and were buried within walking distance too, at the Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas on Calle Lope de Vega, 2 minutes from the Casa-Museo. Look down as you walk along Calle Huertas: lines from their work are engraved right into the pavement, easy to miss if you're not looking, impossible to un-see once you spot the first one.
