The Edge of the World is steeped in history, as it once overlooked ancient trade routes on the Arabian Peninsula. The area was an important hub for international trade, linking the Mediterranean with East Africa and India. Trade routes like the Silk Road and the Incense Route, along with sea routes, made it accessible to exchange goods like incense, spices and textiles. The Arabian Peninsula was instrumental in boosting the regions economy and sharing ideas and technological advancements.

Location and Accessibility

From Riyadh it takes up to two hours to get to the Edge of the World site. You will go through palm groves and scenic landscapes and you may even see camels along the road. The Edge of the World cliffs have an elevation of over 1,100 metres and are located at the endpoint of the Tuwaik Mountain range, about 100 kilometres west of Riyadh. To reach the cliff’s edge you will need to hike uphill for about two kilometres. When you reach the top you will enjoy a birds-eye view from this unique vantage point. It is advisable to go in a 4x4 with air-conditioning as it temperatures soar in the summer months. It's recommended to visiti just before sunset for spectacular colours and cooler temperatures.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit the Edge of the World is during Saudi’s cooler months, from November to March. During this period, the mild daily temperatures offer a comfortable climate for exploring the region. Visiting in winter also means fewer crowds compared to the busier summer months, allowing for a more peaceful experience. During winter you can enjoy activities like hiking, and the sunrise and sunset views are particularly stunning, with colours appearing to be even brighter and more distinct.

Practical Tips for Visitors

There are no costs to enter the Edge of the World site but there are costs involved in joining a guided expedition. We suggest booking your tour through either Amazing Tours or Horizon Tours. Both cater to all levels of fitness and offer a range of hiking trips from intermediate to challenging. A moderate level of fitness is required to hike to the top of the cliffs. 

Please note that the Edge of the World site is situated in barren desert and as such there are no restroom facilities. 

As with any visit, careful preparation is required:

  • Bring lots of water to avoid dehydration
  • Bring along sun protection, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Rocks are slippery so wear comfortable, closed-toe hiking boots/shoes
  • A windbreaker or jacket is useful when the sun goes down as temperatures can drop quite quickly. 
  • We advise that you dress modestly and keep your shoulders and knees covered.
