Get your caffeine fix in Wellington. Check out our guide for the best coffee spots in Wellington

Wellington is often described as a city fuelled by caffeine and for good reason. On nearly every corner you will find a café or a restaurant serving a hot and iced coffees. Café culture is thriving in New Zealand’s capital, and whether you’re looking for a long black, flat white, or a cold brew sweetened with condensed milk, Wellington offers coffee lovers their daily fix – sometimes more than once during the day.

Check out this list of the five best coffee shops and cafés in Wellington, serving up the best espresso's, cold brews and matcha in the city.

1. Customs Brew Bar

Address: 39 Ghuznee Street, Te Aro, Wellington

For quality coffee head to Customs Brew Bar by Coffee Supreme, a mainstay coffee roastery in Wellington. Customs Brew Bar offers both indoor and outdoor seating on Ghuznee Street, the coffee menu is short but excellent. Choose between espresso or filter coffee, hot or cold with your choice of milk or alternatives ranging from almond, oat, soy or coconut. Their toasted sandwiches on potato sourdough are just as delicious as their coffee. Try the avocado, labneh and hot pickled carrots and the leek, aged cheddar and cavolo nero (black kale). Yum.

2. The Hanger

Address: 119 Dixon Street, Te Aro, Wellington

The Hanger is the original coffee bar for the roastery and wholesale operations of Flight Coffee which started in 2012. Here, the iced coffee options are as good as the hot. Their Bomber Blend from Burundi, Colombia, Timor-Leste and Brazil tastes like orange, caramel and cacao. The Brazilian espresso Fazenda Irmas Pereira tastes like chocolate liqueur, orange zest and sticky date pudding. Cold coffee options include summer brown, an iced flat white and the cold mocha which consists of cold drip coffee and chocolate. You can also try one of their coffee flights which always offer something new and interesting. The Hanger’s all day menu features delicious Belgian waffles, burrito’s and a crispy bacon butty. We recommend sharing a plate of paprika hand cut fries or gluten free halloumi bites.

3. Evil Twins

Address: 161B Willis Street, Te Aro, Wellington

Evil Twins brings the vibe. Inside the coffee shop on Willis Street, the walls are covered with graffiti lettering and the friendly barista’s and waitrons are all gorgeous. This stylish café serves up the staples or your morning fix, but their claim to fame is their iced drinks served in glass mason jars - perfect for sharing. An almond milk triple shot latte or matcha tea makes for the perfect afternoon pick-me-up.

4. Peoples Coffee

Address: 2 Constable Street, Newtown, Wellington

Peoples Coffee, an advocate of sustainability and fair trade coffee, offers three Wellington locations. The Constable Street Café is the original – it opened in 2004 and attracts a steady flow of local fans and out-of-towners and has a buzzing ambiance. You can enjoy your coffee with a delicious pastry or slice of toast but the focus is definitely on organic Peoples coffee beans which are roasted just around the corner in Newtown.

5. New Chapter Coffee Brewers
