Discover Authentic Montevideo: A Local Travel Guide by Mercure

At Mercure, we believe you shouldn't need a guidebook to feel like you belong somewhere. That's the idea behind Discover Local: since 1973, every Mercure hotel has been built around its neighbourhood, not just dropped into it — from the décor on the walls to the flavours on the menu. Step into any Mercure and our teams are on hand with the kind of tips you won't find in a guidebook: the market stall locals queue for, the bar where nobody speaks English, the walk that skips the crowds. They live here. They know. Discover Local isn't a generic city guide — it's a short, honest list of the restaurants, markets and neighbourhoods our own hotel teams actually recommend to guests, updated as the city changes around us. Below, you'll find our picks for Montevideo, an interactive map to help you find your way, and answers to the questions travellers ask us most. So — where will Discover Local take you?

Our map pins local favourites such as La Rambla, Punta Carretas Lighthouse and the Castillo Pittamiglio, alongside our Mercure hotel.

Top 5 Things to Do in Montevideo

Mercado del Puerto

Montevideo's 1868 iron-and-glass market in Ciudad Vieja is where the city grills in public - order asado de tira or a provoleta at one of the parrilla counters, and wash it down with a medio y medio (half sparkling, half still wine).

La Rambla

The waterfront promenade runs unbroken for more than 20 kilometers from the port to Carrasco. Locals will tell you it's the longest continuous sidewalk in the world - cycle a stretch of it at sunset and you'll believe them.

Ciudad Vieja

Start at Plaza Independencia, pass the Palacio Salvo, then walk the pedestrian Peatonal Sarandí through the old town's faded, elegant facades toward the port.

Castillo Pittamiglio

A strange, beautiful little museum-house a few minutes' walk from Punta Carretas, built by an eccentric alchemist architect. Worth the detour if you like your sightseeing a little odd.

Pocitos

Montevideo's beach neighborhood, a short walk or drive from Punta Carretas, where locals jog the sand at sunrise and linger over mate at sunset.

Where to eat
Mercado del Puerto is the classic, but try a parrilla for pamplona, rolled stuffed chicken or pork. Breakfast means homemade bread.
Along the Rambla
This is Montevideo's real social spine - cycle, walk or just sit with a mate gourd and watch the Río de la Plata. Punta Carretas and Pocitos both sit directly on it, an easy stroll from your hotel.
Right outside your hotel
Mercure Montevideo Punta Carretas is two blocks from Punta Carretas Shopping, about a 12-minute drive from Ciudad Vieja.
