Discover Authentic Ponta Delgada Azores: A Local Travel Guide by Mercure

At Mercure, we believe you shouldn't need a guidebook to feel like you belong somewhere. That's the idea behind Discover Local: since 1973, every Mercure hotel has been built around its neighbourhood, not just dropped into it — from the décor on the walls to the flavours on the menu. Step into any Mercure and our teams are on hand with the kind of tips you won't find in a guidebook: the market stall locals queue for, the bar where nobody speaks English, the walk that skips the crowds. They live here. They know. Discover Local isn't a generic city guide — it's a short, honest list of the restaurants, markets and neighbourhoods our own hotel teams actually recommend to guests, updated as the city changes around us. Below, you'll find our picks for Ponta Delgada, an interactive map to help you find your way, and answers to the questions travellers ask us most. So — where will Discover Local take you?

Our map pins local favourites such as Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and the Porto Formoso tea factory.

Top 5 Things to Do in Ponta Delgada Azores

Portas da Cidade

Three 18th-century arches, built from the same black basalt and white lime that defines Azorean architecture, mark the old entrance to the city where the harbor used to reach. They sit right in the main square, and every walking route through the historic center starts or ends here.

Mercado da Graça

Built in 1848 and still the main market on the island, this is where to find São Miguel's cheeses, honey, and queijadas alongside the fish counters. Lunch at one of the counter stalls runs around €10, and it's an easy walk from anywhere in the historic center.

Largo da Matriz and Igreja Matriz

The square behind Portas da Cidade is the actual social center of town, terraces filling up by early evening with locals meeting after work. The church itself dates to the 1700s and is worth ducking into for the gilded woodwork.

Arruda pineapple plantation

A short drive from the center, this working plantation grows the tiny Azorean pineapples in low glasshouses heated by controlled smoke fires, a technique unique to São Miguel. Tours run through the growing houses and end with a taste of pineapple liqueur.

Avenida do Mar waterfront

The marina promenade runs along the harbor with the old fort and the former bullring both visible from the same stretch. It's flat, easy walking, and the spot where locals go for an evening run or just to watch the ferries.
