Discover Authentic Bari: A Local Travel Guide by Mercure

At Mercure, we believe you shouldn't need a guidebook to feel like you belong somewhere. That's the idea behind Discover Local: since 1973, every Mercure hotel has been built around its neighbourhood, not just dropped into it — from the décor on the walls to the flavours on the menu. Step into any Mercure and our teams are on hand with the kind of tips you won't find in a guidebook: the market stall locals queue for, the bar where nobody speaks English, the walk that skips the crowds. They live here. They know. Discover Local isn't a generic city guide — it's a short, honest list of the restaurants, markets and neighbourhoods our own hotel teams actually recommend to guests, updated as the city changes around us. Below, you'll find our picks for Bari, an interactive map to help you find your way, and answers to the questions travellers ask us most. So — where will Discover Local take you?

Our map pins local favourites such as Bari Vecchia, the Teatro Petruzzelli and Pane e Pomodoro beach, alongside our Mercure hotel.

Top 5 Things to Do in Bari

Basilica di San Nicola

The 11th-century Romanesque church holds the relics of Saint Nicholas in a crypt lined with 26 marble columns, and pilgrims from Eastern Europe still arrive by the coachload for the feast day in May. Go early before the tour groups; the white stone facade catches the best light around 9am.

Strada delle Orecchiette in Bari Vecchia

On Via Arco Basso, in the old town's tangle of alleys, women set up folding tables each morning and shape orecchiette by hand with a butter knife, laying the pasta out on wooden boards to dry in the sun. Buy a bag for a euro or two and it's fair game to watch, but ask before you photograph anyone's hands at work.

Teatro Petruzzelli

Italy's fourth-largest opera house burned down in 1991 and reopened in 2009 rebuilt to its original 1903 splendor, gilded ceiling fresco included. Check the program for opera or ballet, but even a daytime guided tour (roughly €10) gets you into the auditorium.

Molo San Nicola fish market

Locals call this stretch of the old port N'dèrr'a la Lanze, and the boats come in with the day's catch well before most visitors are awake. Show up around 7-8am to watch fishermen sell straight off the boats, then find a bar nearby for a coffee before the heat sets in.

Lungomare Nazario Sauro

The palm-lined seafront promenade runs along the Adriatic past the old town's fortress walls, and it's where Bari does its evening passeggiata. Grab a gelato from one of the kiosks near Piazza Massari and walk it toward the Fortress for the sunset view back over the water.
