Discover Authentic Paris West: A Local Travel Guide by Mercure

At Mercure, we believe you shouldn't need a guidebook to feel like you belong somewhere. That's the idea behind Discover Local: since 1973, every Mercure hotel has been built around its neighbourhood, not just dropped into it — from the décor on the walls to the flavours on the menu. Step into any Mercure and our teams are on hand with the kind of tips you won't find in a guidebook: the market stall locals queue for, the bar where nobody speaks English, the walk that skips the crowds. They live here. They know. Discover Local isn't a generic city guide — it's a short, honest list of the restaurants, markets and neighbourhoods our own hotel teams actually recommend to guests, updated as the city changes around us. Below, you'll find our picks for Paris West, an interactive map to help you find your way, and answers to the questions travellers ask us most. So — where will Discover Local take you?

Our map pins local favourites such as Villa Savoye, the Château de Monte-Cristo and the Albert-Kahn museum and gardens.

Top 5 Things to Do in Paris West

Versailles

The château and its gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most-visited palace in France — the Hall of Mirrors alone is worth the queue. Go early, or late in the day, to see the gardens without the tour groups.

Saint-Germain-en-Laye

The château here houses the National Archaeology Museum, and the terrace behind it looks out over a forest of roughly 3,500 hectares — once used for royal hunts — toward the Seine and western Paris.

Rueil-Malmaison

Home to the Château de Malmaison, the residence Napoleon and Joséphine shared after their marriage. It's a quieter, more personal stop than Versailles, and considerably shorter on queues.

La Défense

Paris's business district and open-air sculpture park in one — modern towers, the Grande Arche, and a pedestrian esplanade lined with public art. A useful contrast if you've spent the day among 17th-century château rooms.

Rambouillet

Another royal château, still used today for state functions, set beside a national sheepfold (the Bergerie Nationale) founded in the 1780s under Louis XVI. The surrounding forest offers walking trails away from the crowds.
