It is a rumour that has run across London for decades. In the English capital, pregnant women supposedly have permission to urinate in a policeman’s helmet. Believable? Not really. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city simply had the intention to allow young pregnant women urinate in public if no toilets were nearby. The usual distortion of word-of-mouth stories took care of the rest and the outrageous claim settled firmly into the collective consciousness. It hardly seems necessary to advise you not to ask a bobby for his helmet if nature calls.
