PUB FARE WITH A SIDE OF GHOST

Exeter

66 South Street

The White Hart serves all the traditional British comfort foods one would expect: fish and chips, roast chicken, Yorkshire pudding and real ale. But what’s not on your typical pub menu is an ensemble cast of ghosts. The shadow of nasty Judge Jeffreys (the Hanging Judge) makes an occasional appearance. A figure in a long black cape, like the woman in the Scottish Widows life insurance adverts, has been seen in the courtyard. And a basilisk – the king of serpents that kills with a single glance – supposedly lives in the pub’s well. Not sure if it’s sober folks or the beer talking? Head down to this 700-year-old coaching inn for a spirited meal and find out for yourself.
