Porto

Largo de Aviz - Santa Marinha, Vila Nova de Gaia, Norte

A World Heritage Site since 1996, this 16th-century former Augustinian monastery now serves as the barracks of the Serra do Pilar Artillery Regiment. Located in Vila Nova de Gaia, it commands a stunning panoramic view over the quaysides of Porto and Gaia, their port wine lodges, red rooftops and colourful tiled buildings. The layout of the original church and the cloisters with their 36 ionic columns is unique in Portugal, built in a perfect circle. After exploring the monastery, take the cable car down to the restaurants of Vila Nova de Gaia or walk across the spectacular double-deck Dom Luís I bridge back to the historic centre of Porto. Both offer the perfect photo op!
