Remain calm if, in addition to the gondolas leaning to the right to counterbalance the push
of the gondolier’s single oar, you also see a campanile that seems askew. The tower
of St. Stephen's Church (Chiesa di Santo Stefano) has been at an incline since the beginning of its construction, when its foundation started to cave in. The bell tower was completed, always at risk of falling, but thanks to continuous monitoring, still remains standing today.
Other towers that also don’t stand so straight are those of Saint George of the Greeks (San Giorgio dei Greci) and St. Peter’s Church (Chiesa di San Pietro).
