A FAÇADE FOR TOMMASO RANGONE

Venice

Chiesa di San Zulian - Calle Specchieri S. Marco 615

The little church dedicated to Saint Juilian the Hospitaller San Ziulian in dialect, has a very particular façade: above the entrance door there is an imposing statue and several symbols. The man sitting on an urn is Tommaso Rangone, a doctor who made it big thanks to a natural remedy for syphilis. In his right hand he is clutching the miraculous plant, which as shown on the globe comes from South America. Around Rangone, a globe is inclined according to the latitude of Venice and showing the horoscope and day of his birth, beyond the writings listing his merits. There is no need to specify that the contractor who built the edifice in 1553 is the very Tommaso Rangone.
