THE GRACE OF SAN PROSPERO
Reggio emilia
Piazza Antonio Casotti
In the Piazza Casotti there was a building containing the communal prisons and not far away from it, the executioner’s house.
Every year on the 24th November, a random person was chosen from among thieves, murderers and evaders and scallywags to be given pardon and blessed in the Basilica. This was done to pay respects to the city’s patron Saint Prospero.
When the prisons were closed down, piazza Casotti became the piazza of old iron junk because of the market selling old work instruments and junk, nowadays an antiquities display.
