REDEMPTION BOOK
Bologna
Piazza Liber Paradisus
In Paradise, slaves will never exist again.
The book safeguarded in the National Archives, named after the first word written in its text, marks an incredible record held by the city of Bologna: the abolition of slavery, following the public announcement made on August 25th 1256. For the first time in world history, all citizens were proclaimed free and slaves were redeemed with a payment made with public money.
750 years after the proclamation contained in the Liber Paradisus (book of heaven), Bologna has commemorated one of the most important human rights by scanning and uploading the document online, and naming a piazza after it.
Lest we forget, Paradise states that all men live in perpetual freedom.
