An understated but noticeable silhouette of a small black horse sits atop the roof of Schloss Charlottenburg, Berlin’s largest palace. What is it? A weathervane specially made for a former resident, King Frederick I of Prussia, who liked to know which way the wind was blowing. In his bedroom, one of the palace’s most visited rooms, a superb dial sits just in front of his bed. Connected to the horse weathervane, the dial informed the King of the wind’s movement in real time…without even leaving his bed. Now that’s a king’s prerogative.
