A PG-RATED COPY OF THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY

Reading

Reading Museum, Blagrave Street

The original Bayeux Tapestry is kept in the French city which gave it its name. But did you know that Reading is home to the world’s only authentic copy? In the 1880s, 35 Staffordshire needlewomen embroidered the copy using photographs of the real thing. They sold it to the Mayor of Reading, and today you’ll find it in Reading Museum. It’s a faithful replica, but look very closely and you may find some small details which differ from the original. For instance, whereas the French have no problems with nudity, the Brits prefer to clothe their embroidered men. Follow the story of the Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings – without leaving Reading.
