In Manchester, even architects avoid the rain. Perpendicular to King Street, the city’s most important shopping street, a small lane by the name of Boardman has metal umbrellas affixed to the walls. The umbrellas are a tribute to Doctor John Dalton, a specialist in meteorology and inventor of a number of tools measuring humidity and atmospheric pressure. They will surely keep you dry in the event of rain… which is apparently a regular occurrence in Manchester.
