WATT A BEAUTIFUL CHAPEL!

Guildford

Watt’s Chapel, Down Lane, Compton

The centrepiece of Watts Cemetery is the chapel, an Arts & Crafts masterpiece designed by Mary Watts. In 1895, Mary started teaching villagers how to model tiles from the local terracotta clay. Look closely at the chapel’s walls and you’ll see their beautiful symbols and patterns. Keep an eye out for the grave of Brave New World author Aldous Huxley in the surrounding cemetery, where Mary and her husband G.F. Watts also rest. You can admire more of the couple’s works at the Watts Gallery just up the road.
