Eynsford

Eynsford Castle, Eynsford

Eynsford Castle is a rare example of an early Norman ‘enclosure castle’. Built by the Eynsford family around 1085, the castle comprised an inner and an outer bailey, the former protected by a stone curtain wall. The subject of an inheritance dispute, the castle was ransacked and abandoned in 1312, gradually falling into ruin. Today, the parts of the stone curtain that have withstood the test of time still stand tall around the remains of the hall building, where the inhabitants would have lived, the solar and the gatehouse.
