A VERY CURIOUS MYSTERY

Arthur’s Seat is a mountain steeped in Scottish history and a serious contender for the location of King Arthur’s fabled Camelot. It was here in June 1836 that five young boys out rabbiting discovered 17 miniature coffins in a cave, arranged on three tiers. Of the eight that remain today, each measures a mere 95 mm in length and contains a carved wooden figure with custom-made clothes. Who fashioned them, what were they for and why were they buried in such a particular way? Witchcraft? Honorific burial? The theories abound (just ask Edinburgh author Ian Rankin) but the mystery remains intact to this day.
