Broughton Castle

Fortified by a moat, Broughton Castle is an imposing medieval monument. Intimate glimpses into the lives of its long-gone inhabitants can be found in the interior’s ancient art. Walk along a vaulted passage under stone-carved corbel heads that are over 700 years old. Gaze up at two pagan Green Men with foliage falling from their mouths, representing the triumph of spring over winter. In the King’s Chamber, a 16th-century chimneypiece depicts a scene from the legend of Erysichthon, the doomed King of Thessaly who angered the gods by cutting down a sacred oak tree. You can also relive scenes from famous feature films Jane Eyre and Shakespeare in Love, both of which were filmed here.
